Spring Dreaming on Main Street

Lora Butcher

Summer is coming.
Winter is weeks behind.
A cool breeze is breaking
over a daytime smile
and cracking away the crystal air
all around my eyes, sparkling,
with opportunity that zings.
Now is the time to pop
out a new sign on a dream, to
get out the broom and sweep
the dust of dread off the floor, to
open the door and invite in others,
to expect good things, to keep trying.
There is no mercy for new beginnings.
Like migrating birds, we need to
find the best weather for our needs,
because there ‘s a good chance
we’ll be out in it, the doors locked
behind us on that chance we took.
But it feels good, doesn’t it?
To have a chance.
