Amanda Andrews
When my mother died, she left behind
a navy-blue journal labelled
“The animals in our backyard”
And inside were colouful sketches
of each animal she’d spotted in High Park,
followed by little notes written in the prettiest
handwriting.
The book was simple,
written with purpose and yet,
it sparked an unachievable admiration
inside my fingers—
the joy of writing,
to leave gilded words behind.
