Nuggets

Rachel Novak

Here’s to black coffee and sunshine type of mornings.
Situated on the right side of the windowpane.
Noting details that create warmth from within.
Counting them like golden nuggets.
Stashing them in mental pockets to pay tolls
that may arise in the road of my day.
Legs tucked beneath me.
This big leather chair.
16 years and finally it's a comfortable place to sit.
Time.
Handmade blankets, my cat on my lap.
Mom’s heart-shaped ring.
The ring on the wood caused by the warmth of my mug,
Artsy mugs.
Made by the hands of my circle, whom I am so lucky to have.
Here’s to luck, in general, or is it the aligning of stars?
Here’s to my curious mind!
Its ability to wander free and return at once like
a loyal dog, or that squirrel, spilling my feeder.
Every damn day.
Natures feathered choir is scattered.
They were performing so loudly before,
I heard them through the glass.
Here’s to blinking slowly on the inhale.
Ethiopian blend.
Here’s to 240 seconds spent wisely on a Monday.
My cup is now empty to the eye,
yet simultaneously it overflows.
