Moving On

R. Gerry Fabian

Saying goodbye is wordless.

A vacant apartment is not vulnerable
like so many familiar strangers
here and then gone.

It holds segments
in specific solid sectional flashes.
July fourth in the corner,
Christmas by the left wall,
a champagne cork mark on the ceiling,
or the scent of someone’s life.

This final deed
is best done
in the evening
when blank walls
hold no power.
