In the Beginning

Laura Peña

it was all water
I had gills and fins
razor sharp teeth
I swam all day
and night
ate my fill until
I hungered for more
came up to the surface
the air burned
I thought I’d die
but I came ashore
fins turned to feet
body and hands
appeared
gills closed
nostrils formed
the air still hot
but easier to breathe
teeth grew smaller
as did my appetites
and for millennia
it was peaceful
then the earth grew
crowded, violent, intolerant
my love for it
burned me out
and now I long
to return
to the sea
