“Impression, Sunrise,” Monet’s Canvas
Glen Mazis
The blues hover
spread across horizon
cover the sky
hang above ground
glide over water
like a thick flock
of flying gulls
turned misty pigment
signaling serenity
for a moment
of dawn
before the factories
awaken.
The red sun’s rays,
evanescent buoys,
guide two row boats
on an early morning
run through
Le Havre harbor
while the haze
shrouds the large clippers,
masts tangling sky,
bigger brothers
waiting their turn,
while smokestacks behind
are fathers who stand
back overseeing.
