The Liquid Canvas

Kenneth Reimer

Coloured by light
and impressed by
the brushstroke wind,
West Bay reflects the transformative
palette of dawn.

At the mouth of the bay,
where the sun
ignites a swath of firs and hemlock,
the water is smoothed
in golden yellows.

But on the near dark, green surface,
small waves paint fragile lines of white
that sparkle out of existence
and by the shadowed far shore
become a swarm of fire flies
against a night sky.

Below this ledge of stone,
a patch of gentle blue
is framed by dry bristle thrusts
of white.

All lay mingled
on the breathless canvas,
boundaries blurred
by overlapping waves –
one waterscape
of mountainside and sky.
