Standing Watch

Edward Ahern

A Pantoum

I am with others yet feel alone
viewing rolling open ocean waves
glinting faintly under cloud spatter,
the half-moon hinting at vision

Viewing rolling open ocean waves,
the ponderous hull swaying gently,
the half-moon hinting at vision,
bridge lights shrouded into dark

The ponderous hull swaying gently
its many tons for now my keeping,
bridge lights shrouded into dark,
seas flickering ebony and steel

Its many tons for now my keeping
I stand apart in good company.
seas flickering ebony and steel,
my thoughts swelling with them
