Snowdrops
John Grey
Cold day, hard earth,
yet snowdrops poke through
dormant grasses,
survive some,
flourish some,
flaunt white petals in the frost,
bear night’s burden
tucked-up on their stalks.
Such delicate heads
that seek out stray warmth.
Such a nod to beauty
in a world bent on survival.
It’s still winter’s gameboard
but spring’s die is cast.
