Seven Suns

Robert Walton

My grandmother sat beneath seven suns
Blazing above a gleaming mirror.
She leaned forward,
Peering at her elegant reflection.
“Grandmother?”
She plucked up a thick, soft brush,
“What, dear?”
“Why are the lights so bright?”
She brushed one cheek
And then the other,
“To show me the truth.”
She dabbed a finger
Into lovely cream,
Rose-scented,
And rubbed it on
Small lines beside her lips
“Why?”
She dabbed again
And rubbed harder,
“So that I may hide the truth.”
She smiled
And her mirror eyes
Met mine,
“From everyone
But you.”
