Sarcophagus

Maree A White

Sometimes life is like
a long, drawn-out burial -
it feels like being trapped inside
a black walled sarcophagus.

Wooden walls close in
as if to force waning life energy
through converging tides
of past and present.

Long held images spew out
and eventually coalesce
into a discernible story.
If you can

endure

the suffocation subsides,
walls slowly recede,
and life returns
after the entombment.

What was black
is freshly painted in spring
revealing the gift of you
here, now and unfolding.
