Prelude

Alexa Radson

There are secrets spilling
on the living room floor,
but you and I are in the kitchen
making tea. Boiling and brewing.
Steeping and pouring. A splash
of milk. A spoon of sugar.
And we are smiling and teasing
each other for our tastes and
keeping our voices low, lower,
as if we were the ones spilling
secrets. But we are
hesitantly sharing a glance,
tentatively, a touch, a question,
an answer. Yes, I’ll take sugar.
Yes, I’ll take milk. Yes, yes,
yes. Please.
