Our Little Garden That We Lost

Susana Arrieta

She - spreads hundreds of seeds
hoping / for slivers of sunshine
to begin percolating-persistently
through invasive maple leaves /
perhaps life will form its intricate
journey towards everlasting death

He - rests impatiently / reaching for
the screen, depository of dreams -
questioning the validity of reality
the eyes? deteriorating swiftly
the price of vacuous entertainment?
a mortal soul broken by discord

They - swim / head above water
barely moving, inhaling moonlight
inheriting pains that used to have
cures —yet the allure of the night
fades without fulfilled dreams— us,
servants of the machine that dims

There will be hope as long as /
there is soil — there will be life
as long as the sunshine reaches us
we will be near as long as we can
reset restart reinvent resurrect:
Turn me off, turn me on again.
