From Wish to Sunflower

Gabrielle Munslow

A blade of grass tilts,
the weight of air bending it.
Dandelion clocks pulse—
white spheres trembling,
ready to break.

One breath scatters them—
seed parachutes drift,
wishes hitchhiking the wind,
each fleck a dot of sky.

Now the earth holds sunflowers,
stems muscled green,
faces lit like coins.

Bees in gold-armour
climb the spirals of pollen.
Moths, birds, butterflies—
a riot of wings
spinning around their crowns.

Seeds crack open in sparrow beaks.
Petals blaze and fall.
Roots grip the dark,
while the stalks, sun-struck,
bow under rain’s weight.
