Familiar Ways
J.M. Summers
Better this then: mist pooled
beneath the streetlights, ways
with which he is familiar, paths
trodden wearily, gait stumbling,
stained coat covering the furtive,
rolling eyes, shattered arm, following
paths that he knows but that will
remain as unfamiliar to us as the
words that follow the trail of
his winding thoughts, veiled by the
mist which only with his passing
will cede to the brighter light of
a morning bright laying bare the
beautiful, ugly streets before a
gaze as unforgiving as it is stark.
