Becomes Lilac, Mauve and Gold

Connie Taylor

Colors peak through trees
as the sun strives for the horizon
this freezing winter evening
when lilac and mauve predominate
the glowing sky. The colors cast
a mood of gloom that fits a winter day
when evening's cold and snow
grips the earth around me.

The days grow longer now
and winter's icy grip grows weaker.
Soon warm colors will return,
gold will greet the setting sun.
Once more spring will bring new life,
the lilac tree will bloom again
as mauve and pink and purple
burst forth from its boughs.
